CENTRAL SQUARE ORIGINATED IN THE LATE 18TH CENTURY AS CAMBRIDGE’S ORIGINAL DOWNTOWN.
In 1912 the Cambridge Subway was created to provide residents with easy access in and out of the area. At the height of its development in the 1920 - 1950s, Central Square was home to many theaters, large department stores and boutique shops.
